The Bombay High Court on Friday prohibited political parties and individuals from calling for a Maharashtra bandh on Saturday, August 24. The High Court bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya said it will “restrain” the political parties from proceeding with their bandh call in the state to protest against the tragic incident of sexual assault of two kindergarten girls in Thane’s Badlapur.
A division bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar said the Maharashtra government shall take all necessary steps to prevent a bandh. “We are restraining any political party and/or any individual from calling for a bandh. The state shall take all preventive steps,” the HC said.
Notably, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), a political coalition of Congress, NCP (Sharad Pawar Faction) and the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray Faction) has called for a “Maharashtra Bandh” on Saturday (August 24).
However, the call has been challenged by an advocate highlighting the impact of such “Bandh” on citizens.
Speaking at a news conference, Thackeray described the bandh as a stand against “perversion” and urged people from all backgrounds to participate.
