Bollywood has made yet another attempt to popularize India’s LGBT+ community with a new film Badhaai Do. Starring Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar, the film’s trailer shows how a gay man and a lesbian woman agree to marry each other in small-town India. The trailer has garnered promising reviews since its release. Rajkumar, who plays a gay cop, convinces a gay PT teacher, played by Bhumi, to marry him so that his family turns away from him. The concept of homosexuals of the opposite sex marrying each other is known as ‘lavender marriage’.
The term dates back to World War II, 20th century Hollywood, when public figures used to hide their sexual preferences, as it was a taboo. Celebrities in the early days of Hollywood, in order to make a steady career in the film industry, appeared to be straight and married. The lavender color, around the turn of the century, was often associated with homosexuality. Hence, Holywood adopted the term to cover marriages organized to maintain the mask of heterosexuality.
Mental health consultant and wellness coach Aruba Kabir told the Indian Express, the term ‘lavender marriage’ is more than a century old. “Lavender marriage is a choice that allows a person to be themselves, yet protect their personal lives from public speculation,” she was quoted by the outlet.
Badhaai Do also starring Seema Pahwa, Sheeba Chaddha, Nitesh Pandey is releasing on February 11.
Recently, filmmaker Harshvardhan Kulkarni clarified that the film is not inspired by the South Korean film Two Weddings and a Funeral. He also emphasized that lavender marriages are as common as elopement weddings. Harshvardhan mentioned that there are thousands of films in that genre so there may be other films that people may not have heard of. “And when you see the characters, you will feel that it is extremely original and the story is told organically,” said the filmmaker.
