Deputies responded at 3:30 a.m. to reports of multiple shots being fired at a residence in unincorporated Goshen, just east of Visalia, California.
A 17-year-old mother and her 6-month-old baby were among six people killed in a shooting early Monday at a home in central California, sheriff’s officials said, and authorities are looking for at least two suspects.
The Tulare County Sheriff’s Office said deputies reported multiple shots fired at a residence in unincorporated Goshen east of Visalia at around 3:30 a.m.
Sheriff Mike Boudreaux told reporters, “The report was actually that an active shooter was in the area, because multiple shots were fired.”
Boudreaux said deputies found two victims dead in the street and a third man fatally shot in the doorway of the residence.
He said three more victims were found inside the house, including a man who was still alive but later died at a hospital.
The sheriff said investigators are looking for at least two suspects. They believe that a gang has a hand in the murders. Boudreaux said the sheriff’s office conducted a narcotics-related search warrant at the residence last week.
“We also believe this was not a random act of violence. We believe this was a targeted family,” he said.
The sheriff said that two of the victims, the young mother and her child, were shot in the head.
Samuel Pina said Monday that those killed included his teenage granddaughter, Elisa Paraz, and his child, Nicolas Nolan Paraz.
“I can’t wrap my head around what kind of monster would do this,” he told The Associated Press.
Pina said that Paraz and her child were living with her father’s family in Goshen, and that her father’s uncle, her father’s cousin, and her grandmother and great-grandmother were also killed.
He said the family is in shock.
“It comes in big waves,” he said.
Goshen is a semi-rural community of approximately 3,000 residents in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley, 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Fresno.
