Azeem Rafiq denies Joe Root’s wrongdoing at Yorkshire after ‘incredibly hurt’

Yorkshire cricketer Azim Rafiq has said he is ‘deeply saddened’ after England star Joe Root came out with a public note where he denied racism at the club. The England captain is an integral part of the club where he was born and brought up to become a solid international cricketer who would lead England in international cricket.

Rafiq claimed that there was systematic racism in the club of which he was the main victim. He made his displeasure with Root very clear. “Not feeling disappointed either. Incredibly hurt. But it’s hard to accept the uncomfortable truth, it seems,” tweeted Azeem Rafiq.

Last week, England and Wales Cricket Yorkshire were suspended from hosting international matches by the Board (ECB) to deal with the issues raised by Azim Rafiq. While many sponsors have also distanced themselves from Yorkshire following the scandal.

Root, who represents Yorkshire in county cricket, said: “I just want the sport to be a place where everyone is enjoying this beautiful game and feeling equal and safe. It’s sad to know that This is what happened at YCCC so close to home. It’s my club that I absolutely care about. I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting. There’s no debate about racism, one side or the other. It’s simply unbearable Is.”

England’s current Test captain Root says the racism scandal has ruined cricket and ripped lives apart.

“These incidents have ruined our game and ripped lives apart. We must now recover and come back together as fans, players, media and those working within cricket. We have the opportunity to improve the sport I love and be better for everyone.”
