Ayushmann Khurrana’s recent film, Dream Girl 2, was one of the biggest successes of his career. While he has had several hit films, he also faced failures after his debut with Vicky Donor. In a recent interview with Forbes India, Ayushmann credited his 2015 film Dum Laga Ke Haisha as pivotal, leading to a series of eight consecutive hits.
Discussing how he deals with failure, Ayushmann said, “I think you become a true man when you have the ability to deal with failures. Success is a very lousy teacher and your failures are your friends, a philosophers and guides. if you haven’t experienced failures during your early years, it becomes difficult to deal with them when you are at a certain age. Life is like that.”
He added, “After my first film, I saw 3 back-to-back unsuccessful films and its just the kind of films that I was getting. After Vicky Donor I had a certain benchmark but I wasn’t getting films of that ilk. That journey started again with Dum Laga Ke Haisha. Then there were 8 back-to-back super hit films after that. So, its not about the actor. It the kind of script writers you get in touch with and the choices you make, it isn’t about personal craft, it’s a collaborative effort.”
After his successful debut in Shoojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor in 2012, Ayushmann Khurrana starred in Nautanki Saala, Bewakoofiyaan, and Hawaizaada, all of which flopped at the box office. However, his luck changed with Sharat Katariya’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha. In the film, he plays a disgruntled high-school dropout who reluctantly marries an educated but overweight girl. Initially hesitant about their marriage, he gradually falls in love with her after they participate in a race. Made on a budget of Rs 14 crore, the film was a hit, earning Rs 113 crore at the box office.
