The “offer” was interpreted by some as an expression of support for the Congress from the mahant of a temple in a BJP stronghold.

A priest at Ayodhya’s Hanumangarhi temple invited Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to stay with the monks in the temple complex after he vacated his government bungalow, which was allotted to him as an MP.

Gandhi was recently asked to leave the bungalow following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha following his conviction by a Gujarat court in a criminal defamation case, which also sentenced him to two years in prison.

This “offer” was interpreted by some as an expression of support for the Congress from the mahant of a temple in a BJP stronghold.

Priest Sanjay Das said, “We, the sadhus of Ayodhya, welcome Rahul Gandhi to this holy city, we offer him our abode.”

Mahant Sanjay Das is the successor to the prestigious throne of the veteran saint Mahant Gyan Das of Hanumangarhi. Sanjay Das is also the National President of Sankat Mochan Sena.

Speaking to PTI, Das said that if Gandhi wants to come and stay at the Hanumangarhi complex, he is most welcome.

“Rahul Gandhi should come to Ayodhya and visit Hanumangarhi and worship here. There are many such ashrams in the premises of Hanumangarhi, we will be happy if they come and stay in our ashram.
