Tension between Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and Pakistan Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa over the appointment of Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum has reached a climax. New head of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). In the long meeting between the two on Monday night, General Bajwa clearly told the Pakistani PM that the government cannot interfere in military matters.
According to the specifics of the meeting available with CNN-News18, Khan wanted to retain outgoing ISI chief Lt Gen Faiz Hameed till December, but General Bajwa told him that was not possible in any case. He told the Prime Minister that he could retain Lt Gen Hameed as much as 15 November. The army chief also told Khan that the “civil government” should not interfere in military affairs.
At another bar, General Bajwa told Khan that just because he and Lt Gen Hameed had good relations, he could not expect him to “maintain forever”.
However, it is reported that both have resolved their differences in the meeting. Confusion prevails over the appointment of Lt Gen Anjum without official notification from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) even five days after the announcement from the General Headquarters, the seat of the Pakistan Army.
Sources close to Khan said that in the meeting held on Monday night, the Prime Minister made some suggestions which General Bajwa did not accept, including a change in the structure of the ISI.
Sources said that Khan wants the ISI to be like a corps in the Pakistan Army. He said the prime minister was upset with the army because he felt that his position was being weakened.
According to sources, Khan also told Gen Bajwa that the new ISI chief should have been announced by the PMO earlier.
Pakistan’s Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said in a statement, “The Pakistani government has the right to appoint the ISI chief. We will do everything after a thorough investigation.”
However, GHQ sources said that notification of the appointment is possible soon and the new chief would join in the next seven to 10 days.
