The Afghanistan team will have a new batting coach in former Sri Lankan player Avishka Gunawardene, the conflict-hit country’s cricket board announced on Tuesday amid fresh turmoil at home following the takeover by the Taliban.

In an international career spanning almost a decade, Gunawardene represented Sri Lanka in 6 Tests and 61 ODIs.

While he scored a total of 181 runs in Test cricket, Gunawardene scored 1708 runs in the ODI format with a century.

The International Cricket Council said in May that an independent tribunal had acquitted Gunawardene of two corruption charges, allowing him to participate in cricket-related activities.

Afghanistan are scheduled to play 3 ODIs against Pakistan in Sri Lanka next month.

On Monday, Taliban fighters who occupied Afghanistan announced that cricket could go on as usual.
