Representativeness is the percentage of representation which is calculated by dividing the votes polled for the winner by the electorate i.e. the total number of registered voters.

The MPs who made it to the 18th Lok Sabha, on average, represent 33.44 per cent of the total electorate, down from the 35.46 per cent in 2019, as per a new report from the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch (NEW). The analysis shows that there is a drop in the representativeness of the MPs when compared to the number of eligible voters.

Representativeness is the percentage of representation which is calculated by dividing the votes polled for the winner by the electorate i.e. the total number of registered voters. This value represents the percentage of votes won by the winning candidate among the total number of registered voters in the constituency.

As per the report, Tripura West MP Biplab Kumar Deb from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had the highest representativeness at 60.22 per cent. He not just had the highest representativeness but also is the sole MP in the list of 542 leaders who scored more than 60 per cent.

His party colleague Shivraj Singh Chouhan, elected from Madhya Pradesh’s Vidisha, stood at the second position with 57.39 per cent representativeness.

The third was Abhishek Banerjee (55.73 per cent) of All India Trinamool Congress who won from West Bengal’s Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha Seat.

The analysis of the data shows that a total of 365 MPs had representativeness of more than 30 per cent while 177 had it below 30 per cent. Further, at least eight MPs had representativeness of less than 20 per cent.

The bottom three positions were held by three Congress MPs from Punjab. Further, of the eight MPs with lowest representativeness, seven were from Punjab alone.
