Autonomous colleges to add additional courses Mangaluru News – Times of India

Mangaluru: Will add autonomous undergraduate (UG) colleges in the coastal district additional courses of their choice for each stream, in addition to the courses prescribed under national education policy By Mangalore University, The courses include Massively Open Online Courses (MOOCs), Research Components and others.
Four-year UG courses under NEP began this week across the district, and all colleges are following the syllabus prescribed by Mangalore University. However, autonomous colleges have decided to add some short-term courses without diluting the core curriculum. These short-term courses not only give students extra credit, but also improve their skills to make them industry-ready.
Under the four-year undergraduate program of the NEP, it has several exit options. A candidate earns a certificate upon completion of two semesters, a diploma in four semesters, a degree upon completion of six semesters and honors upon completion of four years or eight semesters. The old UG program had six semesters, and got over in three years.
An official of St. Aloysius College shared that without any change or dilution in the NEP syllabus of the four-year courses, the institute has decided to add some more short-term courses to the full-time curriculum. “We will ensure that if a candidate wants to shift to another educational institution after one or two years of completion of the course, these add-on courses along with regular courses will not affect the academic bank of credit. The add-on curriculum will give students an edge to earn credit as well as skills,” explained the official.
Another autonomous college in the region, St Agnes College, is offering add-on courses to its previous UG programmes. The college was offering computer literacy courses free of cost to all the students during the old UG program. However, NEP has added digital fluency as a subject in one semester. Principal of the college Mr.Venissa said that this course is an advancement of computer literacy. “Since the NEP is implemented now, we may add additional courses along with the NEP syllabus in the coming days. At present, the course is given for only two semesters,” she said.
“Autonomous colleges have the flexibility to add open electives and change the NEP curriculum from 20% to 40%. However, in no way should it kill the spirit of the NEP,” said Mangalore University vice-chancellor PS Yadapadithya.
