British tennis star Andy Murray believes his hard-fought victory over second seed Nikoloz Basilashvili at the Sydney Tennis Classic will boost his confidence at the Australian Open.

Murray pulled off a thrilling three-hour late night win against Basilashvili to reach the quarter-finals of the Sydney Tennis Classic. The 34-year-old, who last played at the 2019 Australian Open, said he was happy with his stellar performance in Sydney.

“There was a lot of humidity on the court, to which your body might react a little differently, but yes, it’s not easy to play a match like this,” Murray told reporters. “A long, late finish … and the match went around all day to play.

“I was happy with how I handled the match physically. I would have been younger instead, but I think it might have given me a little bit of confidence as well.

“I still had a little bit left in the tank at the end, plus, I’ll stand in good stead if I’m in that position in Melbourne next week.”

The Briton, a three-time Grand Slam champion, has been given a wildcard in the main draw of the Australian Open starting on Monday.
