Australia vs New Zealand 2022: Chappell-Hadley series postponed indefinitely due to quarantine concerns

New Zealand’s upcoming limited overs tour of Australia has been postponed indefinitely due to COVID issues. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said it was unable to guarantee that the touring party would be allowed to visit after the government decided to impose a 10-day mandatory quarantine in view of the latest threats posed by the Omicron version of the Covid-19. Will be allowed to return to the country.

New Zealand was to play three ODIs and one T20 match during their tour of Australia from 30 January to 8 February.

NZC Chief Executive David White said: “As we now know, Omicron’s arrival prompted a change of heart from the NZ Government, resulting in the imposition of a mandatory 10-day isolation period on all arriving passengers.”

“NZC and CA had explored a proposal to extend the tour and push the date on which the team could return to New Zealand, in the hope that more might be achievable for the government.

“Unfortunately, we received advice this morning that they could not provide certainty on this,” he said.

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said the cricket boards of both teams would continue to work on rescheduling matches.

“We are extremely disappointed that we will not be able to play the scheduled match against New Zealand as planned, although we will continue to work with New Zealand Cricket to reschedule the series,” Hockley said.

“We thank NZC who made every effort to make the series happen, however, as they were unable to get certainty on the return quarantine arrangements, it is simply not possible at this time.

“We know fans will be disappointed and thank them for their understanding given the unique circumstances the global pandemic presents to all. We look forward to welcoming Sri Lanka to Australia next month and will confirm the schedule for that series as soon as possible.”

It remains to be seen whether Australia’s T20I tour of New Zealand in March goes ahead under the current circumstances.
