Australia head coach Andrew McDonald on Wednesday could not fly with his team for the tour of Sri Lanka after the former Test cricketer tested positive for Covid-19.

Australia will begin their month-long tour of the island nation with a T20I in Colombo on June 7 and it is unlikely the 40-year-old head coach will be available for the inauguration. This is Australia’s first tour of Sri Lanka in six years.

A report in cricket.com.au said assistant coach Michael Di Venuto will lead the side for the opening T20Is and McDonald’s is likely to be available from the second game.

Australia will play three T20 Internationals, followed by five One Day Internationals, culminating in a three-format tour with two Test matches in Galle (29 June to 3 July and 8–12 July).

McDonald’s hoped that they would have the coaching staff to step up.

“I feel like I have the coaching staff to step up, and we can pick up a few coaches at different times to meet different tours and different challenges.

McDonald said, “In doing so it is only increasing the depth of our coaching staff… “
