PORT-au-Prince: At least 29 people were killed in a 7.2-magnitude quake that struck Haiti on Saturday, just days before a tropical storm is expected, and Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was waiting for the victims. All available government resources are being mobilized to help the in the affected areas.
The epicenter of the quake was about 125 kilometers (78 mi) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the US Geological Survey said, and extensive damage was reported.
Haiti’s Director of Civil Defense Jerry Chandler told the AP that the death toll was 29 and that teams would be sent to the area for search and rescue missions.
Henry said on Twitter that the ‘violent earthquake’ has caused loss of life and damage in various parts of the country, and appealed to Haitians to unite as they “face this dramatic situation in which we are living now.” ” He declared a state of emergency for a month in the whole country. At a news conference, he said he would not seek international help until the extent of the damage was known.
Videos posted on social media showed collapsed buildings and people running on the streets near the epicenter of the quake.
People in Port-au-Prince felt the tremors and many took to the streets in fear, although there was no damage.
Naomi Vernes, 34, of Port-au-Prince, said she was woken up by the earthquake and her bed was shaking.
“I woke up and I didn’t have time to put on my shoes. We were living in a 2010 earthquake and all I could do was walk. I remembered later that my two kids and my mom were still in . My neighbor went in and told them to get out. We ran across the street,” Vernus said.
The poor country, where many people live in difficult conditions, is vulnerable to earthquakes and hurricanes. It was hit in 2018 by a 5.9-magnitude earthquake that killed more than a dozen people, and a major 7.1-magnitude quake that caused much damage to the capital in 2010 and killed an estimated 300,000 people.
The National Hurricane Center predicts that Tropical Storm Grace will reach Haiti late Monday night or early Tuesday morning.
The earthquake occurred more than a month later President Jovenel Moses was assassinated, sending the country into political chaos, and humanitarian aid groups said the earthquake would add to the suffering.
“We are concerned that this earthquake is another crisis already facing the country – including the worsening political deadlock following the assassination of the president, COVID and food insecurity,” said Jean-Vicence Meuron, spokesman for World Vision Haiti. .
Catholic priest Freddie Alley, who began working with the mission in the Haiti congregation after the 2010 earthquake, told The Associated Press that access to the area was blocked by criminal gangs and was pleading for help.
