Women in Odisha constitute 4.9 per cent of the total liquor consumers in the state. Interestingly, the number of women in the rural areas of the state is more than their urban counterparts.

National Family Health Survey (NFHS)-5 report, recently released by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. India He said that the number of drug addicts is increasing more rapidly in rural areas as compared to urban areas of the state. The most shocking revelation is that more women than men are getting addicted to the spirit in rural areas.

In urban areas, 22.7 percent of men aged 15 years and above are consuming alcohol. Whereas, in rural areas, 30.2 percent of men of the same age group are victims of alcohol addiction. And if the number of drug addicts is taken into account, especially in rural areas, it is a matter of great concern. While women in urban areas account for 1.4 per cent of the total consumers, their counterparts in rural areas account for 4.9 per cent.
