GUWAHATI: Five assembly constituencies in the state, where bypolls will be held on October 30, have again entered electoral mode for the second time in four months. Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sarma started his campaign for three BJP candidates for Thaura, Mariani and. Bhabnipur constituency on Friday, the last day for filing nominations.
Sarma expressed confidence that the BJP would win these three seats, which were won by the opposition Congress (Thora and Mariani) and AIUDF (Bhabanipur), while ally UPPL would win the other two by-elections in Gosaigaon and Tamulpur.
“My political assessment is the election Gossaigaon And Bhabnipur will be worth following closely as the competitions here will be interesting,” Sarma said. While Gosaigaon was won by former BJP ally BPF, Bhabnipur was won by AIUDF in the April elections. Thaura, Mariani and Bhabnipur fell vacant after three MLAs resigned from their parties and joined the BJP in the last two months. BJP has fielded only those candidates, which will give the party the best chance of capturing these seats.
The other two vacant seats, Tamulpur near UPPL and Gosaigaon near BPF, fell vacant after both the MLAs died of Covid-19. Another assembly seat in Assam, Majuli, fell vacant that day when the Election Commission announced the dates for the by-elections. Union minister and former CM Sarbananda Sonowal, who won the seat in April, resigned from the Assembly on Tuesday after being elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha a day earlier.
