Assam NRI raises Rs 13 lakh for pandemic-hit theater artistes. Guwahati News – Times of India

Guwahati: Traditional bramyaman ,mobile theater), which was on the verge of closure due to the pandemic in the last two years, got a new lease of life after Assamese NRI Raised $17,000 (approximately Rs 13 lakh) through a virtual fundraiser in the US on Sunday night.
Those artists, who had no work in these months due to the lockdown and covid banHope to benefit from this fundraiser.
Shilpi Seva, as the charity group is calling itself, was set up last year and has raised Rs 13,000 for 119 artists. This year the fundraising was done on a large scale.
The live charity event saw performances by several artists including Sangeet Natak Akademi Award winning mime artiste, Moinul Haque, Bollywood heartthrob singer Papon and Jollywood music queen Priyanka Bharali. Seagal Theater staged the play Akash based on a short story by Padmashree Bhabhendra Nath Saikia and directed by Bahrul Islam. Renowned actress Nishita Goswami hosted the show.
Hundreds of people registered to watch the live show not only in Assam but also in Germany, Singapore, UK, Mumbai, Dubai and Australia. “Shilpi Seva is committed to disburse 100% of the funds raised among the beneficiaries. We plan to support more than 100 families this time,” said Krishna Hazarika, one of the leading organizers in America.
The charity’s volunteers hoped that the fund would help the artists overcome their hardships and bring them some relief. “Music, theater and culture are their only sources of income. Since the shows were closed due to the virus, he had no other income. They have no pension,” said another volunteer.
Brahman theater has been an integral part of Assamese culture. The Traveling Theater Company moved from place to place with a crew of producers, actors, dancers, singers, technicians, drivers and even cooks. Based on the feedback, they will set up their tent in a particular area and stage show. After that they will move to second place. Shows will start in autumn and end in winter.
Another organizer Anjana Bordoloi said, “Live shows have their own appeal. Once the lights are on and the music starts, the magic happens. They usually camp for three-four days. And each day there’s a new show.” “Since there was no income, some of them became daily wage earners,” she said.
