Assam floods devastated over 18 lakh people; 54 death notices

GuwahatiNine more people died in Assam The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said on Friday that the death toll due to floods has risen to 54. In 28 districts, 18.94 lakh people are affected by the flood situation. The deaths have been reported from Hojai, Nalbari, Bajli, Dhubri, Kamrup, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts of Assam. So far this year, 54 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides in the state.

As per state data, 2,930 villages under 96 revenue circles are currently under water. Flood waters have submerged 43338.39 hectares of crop land in the flood-affected districts.

The water level of Beki, Manas, Pagaladiya, Puthimari, Jiya Bharali, Kopili and Brahmaputra rivers were flowing above the danger mark at many places in the state. At present, 1,08,104 flood-affected people are taking shelter in 373 relief camps set up by the district administration.

Out of which 3.55 lakh people have been affected in Bajli district alone, 2.90 lakh in Darang, 1.84 lakh in Goalpara, 1.69 lakh in Barpeta, 1.23 lakh in Nalbari, 1.19 lakh in Kamrup and 1.05 lakh in Hojai district.

Meanwhile, the flood situation in Assam’s Kamrup district worsened when flood waters entered new areas, affecting over 70,000 people in the area. The water level of Boroliya river and other major rivers of the district is rising after incessant rains.

Flood waters of Boroliya river washed away a part of an embankment at Chaumukha on Thursday and inundated several villages in Hajo area. Earlier on Thursday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma thanked Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor and director Rohit Shetty for their contribution of Rs 5 lakh to the CM Relief Fund for the flood-affected people in the state.
