Assam flood situation grim, over 25 lakh affected

Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam remained grim on Sunday (June 26, 2022) and more than 2.5 million people are still in the grip of the deluge, though the water level has started receding in some areas. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the day visited Silchar in Cachar district, one of the worst-affected areas, and assessed the damage caused by flood waters in Barak Valley town.

According to the latest update by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 25 lakh people are still facing hardships in the state’s 27 flood-affected districts, which include 79 revenue circles and 2,894 villages.

2.33 lakh people have taken shelter in 637 relief camps in the northeastern state, which have been ravaged by floods and landslides for the past two weeks.

The ASDMA bulletin states that relief material is being distributed to the affected population through 259 distribution centers or temporarily opened points.

The NDRF was assisting the district administration in evacuating people from the affected areas besides state forces like SDRF, fire and emergency services, police and ASDMA volunteers.

The bulletin said that so far 67,237 people have been shifted to safer places by various agencies.

Four more people died in floods in different parts of Assam on Saturday, taking the death toll due to floods and landslides in the state to 121 this year.

ASDMA said that fresh landslides have been reported from Kamrup Metropolitan District.

During the last 24 hours, the state received an average of 7 mm of rain.

Since March 1, the state has recorded 1,891.90 mm since March 1.

According to the bulletin of the Central Water Commission, Kopili river at Dharamatul in Nagaon, Barak at BP Ghat in Karimganj and AP Ghat in Cachar and its tributary Kushiara river in Karimganj town is flowing above the danger mark.
