Guwahati: After days of indecision, Congress Chapter closed on aligning with insisted Announcing the names of candidates for all the five seats for the by-elections to be held in the state on October 30 on Tuesday. In a development late on Tuesday, AICC announced candidates Bhabnipur And mariani seats.
Even in the much talked-about Thaura constituency in Upper Assam, it had declared its candidate earlier in the day. whereas Sailendra Nath Das And Luhit Konwar Will contest from Bhawanipur and Mariani, Manoranjan Konwar has been fielded in Thaura.
AICC on Monday night announced a list of candidates for three seats of Thaura, Gosaigaon and Tamulpur but left Bhabnipur in lower Assam for RD as requested by the Assam PCC. RD, however, termed it a betrayal by the Congress as the regional party wanted Thaura and not Bhabnipur.
State PCC president Bhupen Bora said in the day on Tuesday, “We will wait for their response and will also announce the candidate for Bhabnipur seat by tomorrow.”
He confirmed that the Congress candidature for Thaura would not be withdrawn. In Gosaigaon, Congress has given ticket to Jovel Tudu, while in Tamulpur it has given ticket to Bhaskar Dahal.
“Once Congress President Sonia Gandhi has decided something at the AICC level, it is not possible to reconsider it,” Bora said on Thaura, adjacent to Sivasagar, represented by Akhil. The Congress has declared its candidate from the party’s stronghold Mariani.
Against heavyweight BJP candidates like Sushant Borgohain (Thora) and Rupjyoti Kurmi (Mariani), the Congress has not been able to field prominent faces, but Bora claimed that grassroots workers are satisfied. Barring Bhaskar Dahal, who has been a media panelist and Assam PCC secretary, the other two are district level leaders. Manoranjan is the General Secretary of Sivasagar District Congress and Tudu is a local leader from Kokrajhar.
RD has fielded Akhil’s close aide Daijya Konwar from Thaura, but a decision has still not been taken on Mariani. Akhil had earlier said that Congress cannot field any candidate from RD Mariani if the Congress agrees to the Thaura seat bargain.
“Congress will not be a factor in Thaura as their candidate has been alienated from the masses. Raijar Dal will defeat the BJP candidate who turned turncoat after winning the last assembly election on Congress ticket.
