For the students of Dholpur, sharing textbooks and study material in cramped classrooms didn’t matter. Abida Khatoon, a Class V student, said, “For so many days we missed classes. There is no scope to study in overcrowded camps. Schools are the best option for us.”
Dholpur does not have an electricity connection, although the government has several primary schools and three basic health care facilities. Islam’s house was also demolished in the last eviction drive. He has since taken refuge in a nearby area and is unsure of the parents’ decision whether they will continue to send their children to school.

The government was preparing to welcome about 50 lakh students of primary schools on Tuesday. However, attendance remained low in most of the schools. “But the response in upper primary (classes VI to VIII) was good. More students went to schools in rural areas. Overall, 25 to 30 per cent students attended classes in Morigaon today,” it said. Morigaon District Elementary Education Officer, Bulli Gogoi Bhuyan.
