Assam: 13 dead after eating wild poisonous mushroom, others undergoing treatment

At least 13 people, including a 6-year-old child and female tea garden workers, have died in Assam after consuming wild poisonous mushrooms. Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) superintendent Prashant Dihingia in Dibrugarh said on Wednesday that most of the people died during treatment and many others were still under observation.

Dihingia, quoted by news agency IANS, said that 35 people from the tea garden community of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar and Tinsukia districts of eastern Assam were admitted to AMCH in the last five days as they fell ill after consuming mushrooms. Of the 35 admitted, 13 have died in the last 24 hours.

It is learned that the women had picked mushrooms while returning from work in the tea gardens and cooked them for themselves and their children on 6 April. Hours later, he complained of diarrhoea, vomiting and severe abdominal cramps. All were initially taken to a local hospital, from where they were sent to AMCH as their condition worsened.

On 9 April, four persons named Nunu Mirdha (24), Sumli Mirdha (20), Sundar Mirdha (20) and Ajay Bauri (22) of Sonari Napuk tea garden in Babudenga Line were feeling ill and were admitted to the hospital. had gone. According to reports, the condition of these four patients is said to be stable.

According to reports, every year many people fall ill after eating wild mushrooms, and some of them often succumb to their illness. Indigenous people could not identify wild mushrooms that are harmful and not for consumption.
