A bureaucrat, MBA, technical expert, politician and now a minister. Ashwini Vaishnav joined the Prime Minister Narendra ModiTeam with the responsibilities of Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Communications and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on Wednesday. A 1994-batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre, Vaishnav rose to prominence through his meticulous service when the state was hit by a super cyclone in 1999. Thereafter, he spent his long shift tracking the cyclone on the US Navy’s website and was followed by it. Vaishnav has also worked in the PMO at the turn of the millennium. He was also the personal secretary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee till 2003. In 2006, he became the Vice President of the Marmugao Port Trust, where he worked for the next 2 years, and then moved to the US to pursue his MBA. In 2012, he left the corporate sector and set up his own company which operated in Gujarat. Vaishnav, who has held leadership roles in leading global companies such as General Electric and Siemens, holds an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and an M.Tech from IIT Kanpur.

Vaishnav was born in Jodhpur and completed his education from the state, earning a BTech degree in Electronics and Communication. He then obtained his M.Tech from IIT Kanpur, before cracking the IAS in 1994 with an all-India rank of 27.
