Who is Ashwini Vaishnav?
A 1994-batch IAS officer of Odisha cadre, Vaishnav rose to prominence through his meticulous service when the state was hit by a super cyclone in 1999. Thereafter, he spent his long shift tracking the cyclone on the US Navy’s website and was followed by it. Informing the Chief Secretary’s office at regular intervals. “He tracked the cyclone every hour and sent a report to the chief secretary at regular intervals, which became a major source of information for the Odisha government,” said an official working in the chief secretary’s office.

He is a Rajya Sabha member of the BJP from the state of Odisha since June 2019 and enjoys solid support from the ruling BJD. After PM Narendra Modi and the Union Home Minister made it clear that they wanted the former bureaucrat in the Upper House, CM Naveen Patnaik extended his one-time support.

Vaishnav has also worked in the PMO at the turn of the millennium. He was also the personal secretary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee till 2003. In 2006, he became the Vice President of the Marmugao Port Trust, where he worked for the next 2 years, and then moved to the US to pursue his MBA. In 2012, he left the corporate sector and set up his own company which operated in Gujarat.

Vaishnav was born in Jodhpur and completed his education from the state, earning a BTech degree in Electronics and Communication. He then obtained his M.Tech from IIT Kanpur, before cracking the IAS in 1994 with an all-India rank of 27.
