Ashes: ‘Test match cricket at its best, down to wire’ – Usman Khawaja

Australia batsman Usman Khawaja said the hosts would have liked to have won but lauded the struggle shown by England in the draw of the fourth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday. He also hoped to be in good health so that he can be available for future Test matches for Australia.

Khawaja was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’ for his 137 and an unbeaten 101 in both innings of the Test, marking a spectacular return to the format after 2.5 years. “Great game, we would have liked to have won but great fight against England. Test match cricket at its best, down to wire. Could have gone either way, couldn’t have asked for more,” Khawaja said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Asked about his flow in batting while scoring the twin centuries, Khawaja said, “It didn’t feel like I was batting at a different level from the others. I thought Smith was batting beautifully. He would smooch him.” And I was like ‘Let’s do a partnership, the wicket is a bit green’, thought 300 first innings would be a good score. I’m enjoying the game, lots of ups and downs. I know I’ll be next I can go out to the bar and get two ducks. That’s it. A tough game. When things go well, it’s really satisfying.”

Khawaja signed off saying that he hopes to be fit for Australia’s future Test assignments. After the Ashes, Australia has tours of Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India in the next 1.5 years.

“There’s a lot of cricket coming up, fingers crossed, I’ll be healthy. We’ve played beautifully up to this point, have almost gone 4-0 up. Couldn’t have asked for more for this series, hopefully in the next game we can win it, then win a few games. World Test Championship, everything matters.”
