Former Australia pacer Glenn McGrath has tested positive for COVID-19 just three days before the start of the Pink Test in the Ashes at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The Pink Test is played every year at the SCG in memory of McGrath’s late wife, Jane, who died of breast cancer in 2008.

The Pink Test, the opener of the year in Australia, serves as a major fundraising initiative for the McGrath Foundation, which helps families of people living with the dreaded disease and the nurses who support them. The third day of the Pink Test is known as ‘Jane McGrath Day’ and it is not yet known whether McGrath tests negative in time to attend the third day at the SCG. As of now, McGraw will have a virtual appearance when both Australia and England are presented with pink hats.

“Glenn has had a PCR test, which unfortunately returned a positive result. We wish Glenn and his family good health. We hope Glenn remains well and Pink gives a negative result in time to take part in the third day of the Test, now known as Jane McGrath Day, on 7 January.

“We are grateful to Cricket Australia and our partners at the SCG. Also look forward to the continued support to the England cricket team and broadcasters for the Pink Test and still making it the ‘pinkest’ Ashes ever,” said McGrath Foundation Chief Executive Holly Masters.

Australia have already retained the Ashes by taking an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The hosts will not have the services of middle-order batsman Travis Head, who tested positive for COVID-19 and is in isolation in Melbourne along with his teammate.
