Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood will miss the second Ashes Test in Adelaide ahead of the first pink-ball Test of the series in a major setback for Australia. Cricket Australia (CA) said on Monday that Hazlewood has gone to Sydney for a scan and has not traveled to Adelaide with the rest of the team.

The 30-year-old’s injury during a nine-wicket win over England at the Gabba opened the door for Australia to bowl to either Jhye Richardson or Michael Neser at the Adelaide Oval.

Hazlewood bowled sparingly during the second innings of England’s series-opener and went to Sydney for a scan on Sunday instead of traveling with the team to Adelaide.

The second Test of pink ball is starting from Thursday. CA said Hazlewood’s fitness for the third Boxing Day Test to be held in Melbourne from December 26 would be decided after further assessment and rehabilitation.

CA said the selectors would not add any substitutes for Hazlewood to the existing squad and would instead select a new team after Adelaide.

Two-Test pacer Richardson is seen as the front-runner to bowl to Adelaide, although the uncapped Queensland veteran Neser took a five-wicket haul for Australia ‘A’ against England Lions in Brisbane last week . Australia, who retained the urn in England in 2019, lead the five-Test Ashes 1-0.
