Ashes 2021-22: ‘Nothing surprises me about Gabba’ – Michael Vaughan on first Test debacle

Former captain Michael Vaughan has reacted to England’s beating in Brisbane, where they lost the first Test by nine wickets. Vaughan, who led England to a 2005 Ashes victory, said there has been a pattern with Joe Root where he would only raise hopes of going down in a jiffy. As noted by Vaughan, England batted well on the third day to go 220/2 at stumps, still trailing the hosts by 53 runs, giving the Barmy Army hope of a comeback. But Australia broke the stand the next morning, and the visitors were trapped. Thanks to a heavy deficit in the first innings, Australia easily scored the winning run. Vaughan said he was not surprised.

“I thought it might happen. It happens a lot with this England team where you get loads of hope and before you know it, you’re done and dusted off pretty quickly. This week Joe Whatever happened, it didn’t surprise me,” Vaughan remarked.

“You hope things can be different and they will do it right because they have a lot of talent in the team, but basically against the best teams, that’s what England do. If you look at it over the years, when they Have played with better teams – Australia, India, New Zealand; it happened in the summer what we just did, it happened against Australia in 2019 – in this England team, they have terrible seasons.”

Earlier, Joe Root had won the toss and elected to bat on the green pitch. He was all out for 147 runs. In response, Travis Head’s 152 and half-centuries from Marnus Labuschagne (74) and David Warner (94) took his side to 425. In the second innings, despite Joe, England could manage only 297 runs. Root and David Malan returned with scores of 89 and 82 respectively. Eventually, the hosts chased down their small target of 20 runs in 5.1 overs.
