Ashes 2021-22: Mitchell Starc becomes first bowler to take 50 wickets in Day-Night Test

Australia pacer Mitchell Starc achieved a major milestone on Saturday by becoming the first player to take 50 wickets in a day-night Test. Starc’s love affair with the pink ball continues as he took four wickets in the first innings of the second Ashes Test against England. The left-arm pacer created history in his ninth day-night Test.

The 31-year-old dismissed Rory Burns, David Malan, Jos Buttler and Stuart Broad to enter the record books. The top four names in the list of most wicket-takers in pink-ball Tests are all Australians. Mitchell Starc is followed by Josh Hazlewood (32 wickets in 7 matches), Nathan Lyon (32 wickets in 9* matches) and Pat Cummins (26 wickets in 5 matches).

Starc ended the first innings with 4/37 in 16.1 overs as the humble pacer said after achieving history that he had the luxury of playing most day-night matches at home.

“We have had the pleasure of playing eight Tests and playing (six) here,” Starc said. “I don’t think I’ve redeemed it. But we all have a definite plan for it.”

Starc also surpassed the number of Test wickets of Danish Kaneria (261), Joel Garner (259) and Jason Gillespie (259). The premium Australian pacer now has 262 scalps.

Gillespie also congratulated Starc for overtaking in the number of wickets and said that he is inching towards the 300 Test wicket mark.

“I’ll pick up a glass of wine for Mitch tonight. Well on the way to 300+ Test wickets. He’s bowled really well. It’s always nice to see him bowl. Congratulations dude! #Starc #TheAshes,” Gillespie tweeted.

Meanwhile, Starc’s milestones in day-night Tests have handed Australia in command of the second Ashes Test, with the home team taking nine wickets to lead 282 runs on the third day.
