Ashes 2021-22: Geoffrey Boycott calls on Joe Root to step down as England Test captain

Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott has called on Joe Root to step down as captain of the Test team after the tourists lost the 2021/22 Ashes in 12 days of the series.

England were bowled out for 68 for an innings and 14 runs loss in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The result was that Australia retained the Ashes with Root under more pressure than ever to remain as captain.

“Nobody would want to give up captaincy, but it’s not about Joe – it’s about getting people to do better. At the end of this series the question should be asked: Will changing the captain benefit England? Not trying to hurt or just be controversial. We all love Joe,” wrote Boycott in his column for The Telegraph.

“It’s impossible not to like him, but before the team left the UK, Joe said players and captains are defined by the Ashes series, especially in Australia. Boycott, who played 108 Tests for England so far in this series, said We have been terrible and if Joe believes what he is saying then someone else should be given a chance to try and inspire the players.

Boycott criticized Root’s captaincy, saying he lacked the authority and skills to lead a Test team. Under Root’s leadership, England have lost nine Tests this year and have not won the Ashes series.

“Now that Australia are 3-0 up and the Ashes is gone, will Root please stop saying Australia aren’t much better than us? I don’t mind her living in cuckoo land, but stop trying to baby us. If he really believes in what he says, then maybe it is time for him to step down from the captaincy of the England cricket team.

“The fact is staring us all in the face, except those who don’t want to see it. England can’t bat. Our bowling is normal. The catching of wicketkeeper Buttler in particular has been poor. The captaincy who lacks imagination. His team The method of selection and decision making has been quite different.”

The 81-year-old signed off saying he was fed up with Root’s words after losing three straight matches in the Ashes.

“Many of us are tired of these interviews where those who say England will learn from a bad day or those who say they expect a reaction after a poor performance. We have had enough of this garbage. We have to give us ex-players and cricket supporters.” stop fooling.

“Captains accept praise when their team wins, so they have to accept some blame or criticism when they lose. And let’s be honest – we’re not just losers, we’re broke.”
