Arrest of Yadav, Gandhi sparked protest, traffic came to a standstill. Varanasi News – Times of India

Varanasi: After the arrest of Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Lucknow ahead of their Lakhimpur Kheri Yatra, workers of both the parties on Monday staged massive protests in different parts of the city.
Various groups of SP leaders and workers, including SP’s city unit president Vishnu Sharma, a group led by Dr. OP Singh, staged a massive demonstration on the streets and other senior leaders gathered at the district headquarters.
Policemen stationed in the area tried to persuade the leaders to stop the arrest, but to no avail.
Police Commissioner A Satish Ganesh said that around 125 protesters from Kachhahari, Maidagin, Maldahiya and other parts of the city have been arrested and sent to the police lines. They were released on submission of personal bond, the police said, adding that further action to disrupt traffic and law and order would be initiated by the police stations soon.
Another group led by Yuvjan Sabha district chief Kishan Dixit took out a peace march from DAV College to Maidagin crossroads and gave arrest. Similar protests were also held by SP people in other parts of the city, rural areas and adjoining districts.
Congress leaders, including party’s national secretary Rajesh Tiwari, former minister Ajay Rai, former MP Rajesh Mishra, district president Rajeshwar Patel and city president Raghavendra Choubey, protested against the arrest of Priyanka Gandhi by blocking the Maldahiya intersection. Later, he too was arrested and sent to the police lines.
The workers of Samyukta Kishan Morcha also took out a torch procession in support of the farmers’ movement and demonstrated against the death of farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri.
A series of protests across the city, crowds of competitive exam students and their parents, with pilgrims entering the city to perform Pitrupaksha rituals, along with the reopening of markets, led to massive congestion on the roads, disrupting traffic. Done.
ADCP (Traffic) Dinesh Kumar Puri said that due to these reasons all the roads were congested since morning and the traffic went at snail’s speed till evening despite heavy force of traffic police and civil police.
