Police said the rape victim’s mother was arrested two days ago after the relative of the alleged rapist complained that he sexually assaulted her minor son.

Tension prevailed in Ratanpur town of Chhattisgarh’s Bilaspur district where a large number of citizens, traders and some Hindu organizations observed a ‘bandh’ on Sunday to protest against the arrest of a rape victim’s mother. Said.

Police said the rape victim’s mother was arrested two days ago after the relative of the alleged rapist complained that he sexually assaulted her minor son.

Ratanpur town is located about 25 km from district headquarter Bilaspur and 150 km from state capital Raipur.

As per the history of the case, a 19-year-old woman living in Ratanpur had lodged a rape complaint against a local man in March, following which he was arrested and sent to jail, said a police officer.

The uncle of the accused person is a corporator and he allegedly pressurized the victim and her mother to withdraw the case against his nephew. He said the corporator had allegedly threatened the mother-daughter duo to implicate them in a false case.

“On May 19, a relative of the accused lodged a complaint at Ratanpur police station against the rape victim’s mother, alleging that he sexually assaulted her 10-year-old son. Acting on this, the police registered a case against the rape victim’s mother under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and arrested her the same day.

However, condemning his arrest, several local residents reached the police station on Saturday and protested by presenting bangles to the police.

On Sunday, a ‘bandh’ called by local citizens, traders and some Hindu organizations was observed during the day.

Bilaspur Superintendent of Police (SP) Santosh Singh said, “No violence has been reported and the situation is under control.”

Seeing the sensitivity of the situation, Ratanpur police station in-charge Krishna Kant Singh was attached to the line. I have also constituted a three-member team headed by Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) and asked them to submit their report within a week.

Police said though no untoward incident was reported during the bandh, a large number of police personnel have been deployed.
