Aroor Das receives Kalainar Kalaithurai Vithagar Award from Tamil Nadu Government

Popular screenwriter Aroor Das was conferred the Kalaignar Kalaithurai Vithagar Award by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on June 3. Senior journalist I Shanmuganathan was also honored with the Kalaignar Ezhuthukal Award.

Both the awards were presented on the occasion of the 99th birth anniversary of late DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi. The Kalaignar Kalaithurai Vithagar Award is given to a senior member of the film fraternity for his contribution to Tamil cinema. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. The Kalaignar Ezhuthukal Award is given by the Information and Public Relations Department of the State Government to a senior journalist for working on social issues and for the upliftment of backward classes. The award carries a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh.

Veteran screenwriter Aroor Das has contributed behind the success of many films in his career spanning over six decades.

Earlier there was speculation that superstar Rajinikanth would get the prestigious award given by the state government in the field of cinema when top officials of Nadigar Sangam led by Nasir met him at his residence in Chennai recently. Actors Association President Nasir, Vice President Poochi Murugan and Treasurer Karthi visited Rajini’s residence in Chennai on June 2 and consulted with her.

Recently the Government of Tamil Nadu constituted a committee to decide the name of the actor to receive the award, which is given as a Lifetime Achievement Award to a film personality for his contribution to Tamil cinema. Actor Nasir was a member of the committee headed by filmmaker SP Muthuraman.

Asked about the meeting, Nasir said that he had met Rajinikanth with respect. Despite the reason given by Nasir, speculations are rife that Rajinikanth was to be given the Kalaignar Kalaithurai Vithagar Award.
