The avalanches came twice on January 17 and 18 in Kupwara, Kashmir. After this people and vehicles were stuck on the roads. Army personnel saved 30 lives on Tuesday. Apart from this, the roads were also cleared so that the vehicles can ply even in the winter season.

Army and General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) rescued people trapped near Khooni Nala and SM Hill on Chowkibal-Tangdhar Road. As soon as the Army got information about the civilian being trapped after the avalanche, 2 rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the spot. These included the Avalaunch Rescue Team. Of these, 14 were rescued and brought to Neelam Pass and 16 civilians were brought to Sadhna Pass. They were given food and medical help. Also arrangements were made to spend the night.

Despite the dangerous weather, the Army also cleared snow for 12 vehicles stuck on the roads on 18 January. It took 5 to 6 hours for the army to clear the snow. Last year also, the army had rescued people from near Khooni Nala. The area is known for avalanches and heavy snowfall. A citizen of Kupwara told that we are thankful to the army that they saved the lives of civilians. We are heavily dependent on the army for roads, schools and other basic needs.

Last week too, the Army had rescued many women in the midst of heavy snowfall and took them to the hospital. The Army is trying to keep the Zojila Pass open even in the midst of heavy snowfall in difficult weather so that the connectivity of Ladakh and Srinagar remains intact.

9 children died in vehicles during snowfall in Pakistan
On one hand, the Indian Army is trying to save the lives of its civilians in heavy snowfall. On the other hand, 21 people lost their lives after getting trapped in vehicles during snowfall in the tourist destination Muri in Pakistan. Among them were 9 children. These people were trapped in the vehicles for several hours, but no effort was made to rescue them.
