Army Chief General MM Naravane congratulates Neeraj Chopra, praises his parents

Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who created history by winning India’s first gold medal in the track and field event at the Tokyo Olympics, was greeted by Indian Army Chief General MM Naravane on Tuesday after he arrived at the South Block of Raisina Hill.

The Haryana athlete, who is a subedar with the 4 Rajputana Rifles in the Indian Army, visited South Block a day after landing in Delhi from Tokyo, where he created history last Saturday.

Naravane also met the family members who accompanied Chopra.

In a tweet, Sena said: “Gen MM Naravane #COAS interacted with Subedar Neeraj Chopra & lauded him for his unparalleled achievement in winning Gold Medal in #Javelin at #Olympic Games, #Tokyo2020.”

“Gen MM Naravane #COAS congratulates the family members of Subedar Neeraj Chopra for their stellar performance,” Army said.

Bal also shared pictures of Chopra and his family members meeting Naravane on social media.

Chopra was enrolled in the 4 Rajputana Rifles on 15 May 2016 as a direct entry Naib Subedar. After joining the Indian Army, he was selected for training at Mission Olympic Wing and Army Sports Institute, Pune.

Colonel Lt Gen Kanwal Jit Singh Dhillon of Rajputana Rifles also honored Chopra and wrestler Deepak Punia, who finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics.

In a tweet, Dhillon said: “Olympians from Rajputana Rifles / Indian Army, Sub Neeraj Chopra 4 RAJ RIF (Gold Medal) & Sub Deepak Punia 19 RAJ RIF (Semifinalist) were honored by Col. Lt Gen KJS Dhillon of Rajputana Rifles . They were given a check of Rs 6 lakh and Rs 4.55 lakh respectively.
