Apple’s chip supplier TSMC reports gas contamination at chip plant

Apple’s chip supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co said on Friday that some of its production lines in southern Taiwan were affected by contamination of gases used in the chipmaking process. TSMC does not expect the incident to have a significant impact on operations, it said in an emailed statement to Reuters.

Nikkei, which first reported the news, said the company’s most advanced chipmaking facility, the Fab 18, had been hit. It said that all the latest processors for the upcoming iPhone and Mac computers were produced there.

“TSMC is currently conducting stringent follow-up operations to ensure that there will be no issues with the quality of production,” the company said. Apple did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
