The company has filed a patent for this feature which may be introduced in the near future.

The Apple Watch is one of the most popular wearable devices on the market and serves millions of people around the world. Its fitness features have been honed for accuracy and in some cases helped save lives. The company could further strengthen its case by adding a camera to the Apple Watch that could enhance the wearable’s capabilities.

Apple has reportedly filed a patent to bring this feature to its smartwatch and some details have also been revealed through the patent. The filing was spotted by Patently Apple which highlights a possible use case for the camera and where it could fit into the design of a smartwatch.

Apple Watch camera patent: what does it offer

The patent suggests that Apple may embed the camera on the strap. This may not look very practical but as per the patent, the company may have a pop out mechanism that holds the camera in place. Having the camera on the strap also means that the durability of the watch will be important so Apple will have to overhaul the design to make this feature work.

The patent filing also hints that clicking pictures using the camera will require Apple to take out the watch strap and hold the watch unit in the hand. The camera can bring a lot of features to iPhone users, and if implemented properly, you can even use the Watch to unlock the iPhone via Face ID technology.

Apart from this, there is a possibility of 3D mapping on Apple Watch. While the patent doesn’t mention which model of Apple Watch could feature the camera, it is likely that Apple will keep the feature exclusive to the premium Ultra model.

That being said, patent filing is usually done to give full rights to the company and in this case, Apple will have the first right to introduce cameras through Apple Watch in this way. One also has to understand that the filing of a patent does not mean that the product will roll out. But like every Apple product, we look forward to seeing if this patent makes it to production.
