Apple has been wanting to reduce its production in China and India has come across as a strong alternative where it will soon make the iPhone Pro models as well

Apple’s Make in India journey is going to get a new boost with reports saying the company will now start assembling the premium iPhone Pro and Pro Max models in the country from this year.

That’s right, the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro and the 16 Pro Max devices will be set up at the Foxconn units in India, just a few weeks after the big iPhone 16 series launch which is being tipped for early next month, says Bloomberg in a report. Apple has been looking to reduce its dependence on China for manufacturing iPhones, and India has already become a strong alternative to lead the charge.

The company started the make in India mission with the iPhone SE series many years back and gradually its lineup includes the latest iPhone models. But till date, the Pro versions have been manufactured in China, mostly because of the higher component quality and technical workforce on offer. The iPhone Pro model is built using titanium materials, higher version cameras and other advanced tech that needs a better equipped workforce.

The latest development suggests Apple is happy with Foxconn’s setup and confident that its Indian unit can now assemble the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max versions this year. Brands like Apple got a minor relief earlier this year with the Union Budget 2024 cutting the customs duty on mobile components like PCB, display and more.

Apple has already served the benefits of these cuts by slashing the price of iPhone models in India, but it will be intriguing to see if the make in India iPhone 16 Pro models are also offered a similar concession. We’ll be hearing more on these details and Apple’s future make in India plans later this year or even at the iPhone 16 launch in September.

In addition to Apple, Google has also started making the Pixel 8 model in India, and soon the brand will be assembling the Pixel 8a version in the country as well.
