Apple Says It Has Hired Meta’s AR Communications Lead

Apple is working on the most advanced chips for its unannounced AR/VR headset and now a new report claims that the iPhone maker has hired Andrea Schubert, Meta’s communications chief for its Augmented Reality (AR) products Is.

In the latest edition of the ‘Power On’ newsletter, Mark Gurman said that Apple is building out parts of its team that will handle the hardware’s launch and subsequent marketing efforts. Part of this is the alleged recruitment of Andrea Schubert, AR’s communications and public relations chief at Meta, reports Apple Insider.

The latest rumors suggest that the headset will come with several highly sensitive 3D sensing modules to offer innovative hand tracking.

Structured light sensors can detect objects in the hands, compared to which Face ID is able to detect facial expressions to generate animojis.

The headset will focus on gaming, media consumption and communication.

It will have two processors, one with the same level of computing power as the M1, as well as a low-end chip to handle inputs from various sensors.

The headset may come with at least six-eight optical modules that provide AR services through simultaneous continuous video viewing. The device is also said to feature two 4K OLED microdisplays from Sony.

The upcoming Apple headset will be similar to the Oculus Quest, and some prototypes being tested include external cameras to enable some AR features.

It could feature at least 15 camera modules, eye-tracking, possibly iris recognition, and could cost between $2,000 and $3,000.

The AR headset is expected to sport a sleek design so that it is lightweight and comfortable for the wearer to carry around for long hours.

It is also expected that the device will sport a high-resolution display, allowing users to read small pieces of text at the same time while watching other people in front of them.
