Apple reportedly planning to phase out SIM card tray from your smartphone starting from Apple iPhone 14 Chain. According to several reports, the tech giant has advised major carriers to prepare for the launch of the eSIM-only iPhone by September 2022. Apple rolls out support first for example: Technology with the launch of dual-SIM iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and affordable iPhone XR. Currently, every iPhone model launched in 2018 or later (except iPhone SE) comes with support for a physical SIM and an eSIM. Apart from Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series, Samsung Galaxy S20 series, Samsung Galaxy S21 series, Samsung foldable phones, Google Pixel smartphones and some other flagship devices from major smartphone makers support eSIM.
What is eSIM and how does it work
An eSIM is the Subscriber Identification/Identity Module (SIM) embedded in smart communication devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and others. Users can use prepaid/postpaid subscription services on their device with eSIM without any physical SIM card. To use eSIM on supported devices, users just need to install their eSIM profile once the device is activated. Currently, there are three eSIM providers in India – Jio, Airtel and Vi.
It is worth noting that the information stored on eSIM is rewritable. This means users can easily change your eSIM operator with just one phone call. If you want to use your eSIM on any other device that supports eSIM, all you need to do is scan the QR code provided by your operator.
With eSIM, it is easy to recover a lost or stolen device as it is quite complicated to extract the eSIM without unlocking the device. These SIMs are also eco-friendly as they reduce the use of plastic which is used while making physical SIM cards.
