Apple is looking to build its base in India and will eventually start manufacturing iPads and MacBooks in the country as well.

According to sources quoted in a report in the Financial Times, the company is facing challenges in getting the components of the iPhone in good shape.

The problem has been observed at the Tata-run casing factory, where the parts have not yet met Apple’s high quality standards. The report claims that a 50 percent yield in production does not meet Apple’s zero defect objective. Apart from these, Apple is also facing challenges related to logistics, tariffs and infrastructure.

Experts have noted that for companies like Apple to fully manufacture in India, even with the likes of Foxconn, it will take a local supplier ecosystem as well as the workforce to handle such applications. Need to be efficient. The company started the Make in India iPhone journey in 2017 with the iPhone SE model. Fast-forward to 2023 and the company now manufactures in India the latest vanilla iPhone variants that are sold in the country.

But if India is expected to help manage the demand load for global markets through exports, the company will need more support from the government as well as supporting actors, in this case the Tata group. Apple is also slowly looking to use the Indian base to make AirPods, iPad and even MacBook over the next few years.

The company is also close to opening its first set of retail stores in the country, with the first one likely to be in Mumbai and the second in Delhi. Apple is bullish about the Indian market, which Tim Cook has reiterated over the past few years. And if the company really wants to establish a strong foothold in the country, it will have to push local manufacturing further.
