Apple M2 Silicon for Mac Announced: How Is It Better Than the M1 Chipset?

Apple WWDC 2022 just gave us some new hardware to talk about. The company announced a new second-generation M2 chipset for its Macs. The new silicon also made its way to the all-new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13-inch models.

But the fact that Apple introduced the latest generation M-series chipsets at the WWDC 2022 keynote is hardly surprising. After all, we got our first look at the M1 chipset at the WWDC 2020 keynote a few years back.

Apple claims that the M2 chipset promises faster performance than its predecessor, and still offers better power management, which means longer battery life. The new M2 chipset is based on the second-generation 5nm architecture, and even though it has eight cores, Apple says you get 18 percent better performance.

Along with the GPU, the M2 chipset also has 10 cores but the company suggests that it will offer 25 percent more performance than the 8-core GPU on the M1 chipset. All these figures may not make much sense to regular Mac users, and it’s fair to say that Apple is showing the power potential of its in-house chipsets, comparing it to the high-end Intel and AMD hardware in the market.

With the M2 chipset, you can pick up a MacBook with up to 24GB of RAM, and it’ll also be possible to connect to a 6K external display. The Neural Engine has also been enhanced, giving you 50 percent more bandwidth for memory which is now at 100GB/s.

Again, it will be difficult to say whether these claims are valid, but looking at the data provided by the M1 chipset with the Mac, we expect the company to push the performance level further.
