Apple wants to go in-house with all its components

The company is facing technical issues to develop hardware based on its needs and specifications.

Apple has reportedly paused development of its in-house Wi-Fi chip “for a while”.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo wrote in a blogpost Thursday that many investors are concerned that the tech giant’s efforts to develop its own Wi-Fi chip could negatively impact Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chip business.

The iPhone maker’s previous development for a Wi-Fi solution was a Wi-Fi only chip and not a Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combo chip.

From a design perspective it is more difficult to make a Wi-Fi + Bluetooth combination chip than just making a Wi-Fi chip.

As a result, it will be difficult for the tech giant to replace Broadcom’s combo chips with its own as most of Apple’s products use combo chips.

“The slowdown in processor upgrades is adversely affecting sales of end products (such as the A16 and M2 series chips),” Kuo said.

According to Kuo, the company has focused most of its integrated circuit (IC) design resources on processor development to ensure that the world’s most advanced 3nm processors can smoothly enter mass production in 2023-2025. And performance upgrades and power consumption improvements can make it a great improvement over its predecessors.

He also mentioned that in the next two-three years, “Wi-Fi chips will usher in significant Wi-Fi 6e/7 upgrades.”

Therefore, it’s risky for the iPhone maker to use its own Wi-Fi chips “when industry standards obviously change”.

Earlier this month, it was reported that the company was working on a replacement for the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip it currently uses from Broadcom, with plans to integrate it into devices in 2025.
