Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple Inc, asked Kishida to ensure that the rules on the distribution of apps do not reduce user privacy and security.

Apple Inc Chief Executive Tim Cook asked Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to consider the safety of users when regulating the distribution of smartphone apps, Nikkei reported on Friday, citing sources.

Apple has faced strong scrutiny over its App Store practices which charge a 30% fee on payments and subscriptions and do not allow iPhones to use apps from third-party app stores.

The report states that Cook asked Kishida to ensure that the rules for the distribution of apps do not reduce user privacy and security.

Apple and the Japanese PM’s office did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Earlier this month, Apple said it had invested more than $100 billion in its Japanese supply network over the past five years as Cook visited the country.

Revenue from Apple’s services business, which includes the App Store, has been growing at a rapid pace over the past few years and now totals about $19 billion per quarter.
