Anushka Sharma returns as Jhulan Goswami in Netflix film ‘Chakda Express’

Anushka Sharma fans rejoice as the actress, who was last seen in the 2018 film Zero, announced her next project on Thursday. The film Chakda Express will release OTT on Netflix.

Chakda Express is Anushka Sharma’s first project after the birth of her and husband Virat Kohli’s daughter Vamika, which the couple welcomed in 2021.

The film is based on the life of former Indian captain Jhulan Goswami, starring Anushka Sharma in the lead role. Sharing a teaser from the film, Anushka wrote: “This is a truly special film as it is essentially a story of tremendous sacrifice.

“Chakda Express is inspired by the life and times of former Indian captain Jhulan Goswami and will be an eye-opener in the world of women’s cricket. At a time when Jhulan decided to become a cricketer and make her country proud on the global stage. It was very difficult for me to even think of playing the game.”

Anushka shared that the film is a dramatic retelling of the many examples that shaped her life and women’s cricket as well.

“From the support system to the facilities, to having a steady income from playing sports, even making a future in cricket – little has inspired the women of India to take up cricket as a profession. Jhulan’s a struggler and had a very precarious cricket career and was inspired to make her country proud. She tried to change the stereotype that women could not make a career out of playing cricket in India so that the next generation of girls would have a better playing field .

Anushka said Jhulan’s life is a living proof that passion and perseverance overcome any or all adversity and ‘Chakda Express’ is not the most definitive approach in the so rosy world of women’s cricket at that time.

“As a woman, I am proud to hear Jhulan’s story and it is my honor to try to bring her life to the audience and cricket lovers. As a cricketing nation, we have to give our women cricketers their due. Will happen.”

The film is produced by Anushka’s brother Karnesh Sharma and directed by Prosit Roy.
