Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addresses a press conference after holding the first cabinet meeting, in Lucknow, Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Days after Yogi Adityanath was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the second term, he directed officials to launch a special drive for women’s safety from the first day of Navratri. Addressing the officials of Team 9 on Friday, Adityanath said that anti-Romeo squads should be activated in every school and college to stop eve teasing. The team is a group of 9 bureaucrats who take daily instructions from the Chief Minister.

Adityanath said that patrolling should also be increased in the markets and crowded areas and also directed to set up more than 3,000 pink booths in all 75 districts for the safety of women.

Notably, the formation of Anti-Romeo Squad was one of the major promises of the BJP during the election campaign to provide security to women. The party had said that anti-Romeo squads would be formed near colleges and schools to protect the honor of women.

During the rallies, BJP leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and others lauded Adityanath’s efforts in providing security and rights to women in Uttar Pradesh.

In the meeting with Team 9, Adityanath also said that women constables should establish contact with women in rural areas and apprise them of various welfare schemes being run by the government for them.

“All facilities should be ensured in the emergency wards and if there is shortage of staff, the vacancies should be filled at the earliest. The new ambulances will replace the old vehicles which are in poor condition,” he said.

He told that the fourth phase of Mission Shakti will be started on April 10. The mission focuses on the safety of women in rural areas, with women policemen assigned beat duty like their male counterparts.

The Chief Minister directed that women constables should be posted on their beats and proper coordination should be ensured.

The Chief Minister has also asked the officials to consult scientists to prevent the deaths due to lightning. He also asked the officials to ensure that the handpumps in rural areas are again bored and in working condition during the summer months.
