Anshuman Jha recently won the Best Actor award for Lakdabagga at the South Asian International Film Festival in New York. Helmed by Victor Mukherjee, it is India’s first film about an animal-loving vigilante with slick action sequences inspired by the martial art form Krav Maga. The film also stars Riddhi Dogra, Milind Soman and Paresh Pahuja.

Reacting to the news, Anshuman said, “I am very grateful to the entire team of HBO and South Asian International Film Festival, New York, for considering ‘Hyena’ as an opening film and recognizing my character Arjun Bakshi. Best Actor Award. I dedicate this award to Irrfan sir as it was announced after his birthday. Congratulations to Sayani for winning Best Female Actress also. And sorry for this late response because I missed their official mail as I was very busy promoting Hyena. Glad they reached the call. This now motivates me to work doubly hard for Hyena: Chapter 2. Yes, we are back in September 2023 Will start shooting for the sequel.”

The film revolves around a simple boy who is on an extraordinary mission – to fight against the illegal animal trade industry. Animal-loving watchman Arjun Bakshi, while trying to protect his adopted Indian stray dogs, discovers the fact that an underground illegal animal trade cell operates out of the Kolkata port. Upon investigation, he discovers a rare species of Indian striped hyena (hyena) – which has been kidnapped from Corbett National Park and is being sold on the black market.

Anshuman had earlier shared that being an animal lover, the film is very close to his heart. “Beasts and action movies are two of my biggest passions. After playing a gay man in Hum Bhi Alone… I wanted to do something high octane but pure. I have given more than 12 months of my life to training and shooting and trying to be authentic to the ‘hand-to-hand’ martial arts that this film brings. India – Krav-Maga – This is just raw street fight style action. It is an action thriller made by a group of animal lovers, so it is not just an action film, there is much more to it. I am thankful to the team, especially the stunt team of the film.

News18 Shosha reviewed the film and called it a ‘decent watch’. “Anshuman Jha was consistently good in his character of Arjun Bakshi. With a Bruce Lee-like hairstyle and mastery of performing effortless martial arts moves, he could be pitted against any other Bollywood Action heroes like Tiger Shroff and Vidyut Jammwal. Riddhi Dogra looked the perfect fit for a cop with her poise and flamboyant personality. She was also able to master the action sequences like a pro. Paresh Pahuja was menacing as the foreboding villain and had an air of unmistakable indifference around him. But Aksha Kerung as the deadly assassin Vic was the real revelation as she embodied her character and made her debut perfectly without uttering a single piece of dialogue.
