Group Captain Varun Singh, who was injured in a helicopter crash along with CDS General Rawat, passed away on Wednesday. Indian Air Force gave this information by tweeting. The Air Force said that Group Captain Varun succumbed to serious injuries. He was earlier admitted to the Army Hospital in Wellington after he was injured in a helicopter crash on December 8 in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. Later, in view of his critical condition, he was shifted to Bangalore. He was fighting for life for 8 days.

Gallantry Award winner Group Captain Varun Singh comes from a military family. The family of Varun Singh, a resident of Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, is associated with all three forces – Army, Navy and Air Force. Group Captain Varun Singh was from the Indian Air Force (IAF). His father retired Colonel KP Singh was in the regiment of Army Air Defense (AAD). Lieutenant Commander Tanuj Singh, the second son of Colonel KP Singh and younger brother of Group Captain Varun Singh, is in the Indian Navy. Varun’s family lives in Bhopal these days.

Group Captain Varun Singh, a resident of Deoria (Uttar Pradesh), was awarded the Shaurya Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind on Independence Day this year. He was given this award for successful landing of Tejas aircraft from a height of 10 thousand feet even after the flying control system was damaged. Varun did not lose patience at the time of the disaster and made a successful landing of the aircraft by taking it away from the population. He was awarded the Shaurya Chakra for this work.

Also honored with Best Pilot Award
Varun is the current batchmate of Group Captain Abhinandan. On 27 February 2019, Abhinandan had driven out Pakistani planes entering the Indian border. During this time he shot down an American made F-16 from the old MiG-21. Varun has also been honored with the Best Pilot Award.

Studied in Chandigarh, then got selected in NDA

Varun Singh is survived by wife and a son and daughter. He was made the Protocol Officer to receive CDS Bipin Rawat. Varun completed his 12th standard from Chandi Mandir School, Chandigarh. In 2004, he got selected in NDA.
