Anil Kumble back as India coach? This is how the story of his resignation unfolded in 2017

Anil Kumble may return as India’s head coach. According to media reports, after Ravi Shastri’s exit, BCCI may ask him to apply for the top post along with VVS Laxman. But this is not the first time that Kumble’s name is in the news. Back in 2016, he became the coach to resign after his relationship with skipper Virat Kohli became ‘untenable’. “Curriculum correction is needed for Anil Kumble’s exit. The way the CoA removed Kohli under pressure, it didn’t set the best example. However it also depends on whether Kumble or Laxman is ready to apply for the job.

12 June 2016: BCCI revealed the list of 57 candidates who applied for the post of coach of Indian cricket team. Kumble’s name stands out among the candidates, but questions over his lack of experience as a coach cast doubts on his selection.

21 June 2016: Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) consisting of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman interviews Kumble, a select few candidates have applied for the role.

23 June 2016: The CAC appoints Kumble as the head coach for a tenure of one year ahead of former Team India director Ravi Shastri.

24 July 2016: Under Kumble’s leadership, India defeated West Indies by an innings and 92 runs in the first Test in Antigua to win the first match. India won the four-match series 2-0 to give the 46-year-old a winning start as India coach.

25 March 2017: Reports of a disagreement between Kohli and Kumble over the selection of chinaman Kuldeep Yadav in place of injured captain in the starting XI for the decider’s Test against Australia in Dharamsala indicate early signs of friction between the coach and the captain.

28 March 2017: India beat Australia by 8 wickets in Dharamsala to win the series 2–1 and complete an immaculate home season with three series wins on the bounce. Kuldeep Yadav impressed in his debut match by taking four wickets in the first innings. The news of the tussle between Kohli and Kumble seems to be a one-off.

23 May 2017: Kumble, during a presentation to the BCCI, also asked batting coach Sanjay Bangar to be promoted to the rank of assistant coach, while demanding a slot for bowling coach in the structured support staff for the Indian team. There are reports of Zaheer Khan being Kumble’s favorite choice for the new role.

25 May 2017: With Kumble’s contract expiring in June, the BCCI surprised by advertising a fresh resume for the India coaching job. Kumble is given direct entry in this process. The apex cricket body in India later clarified that ensuring fairness in the process is a mere formality.

29 May 2017: Reports of unrest between Kumble and Kohli lead to claims that the Indian captain, along with some members of the team, are unhappy with the coach’s “dominant” attitude.

1 June 2017: Kumble reapplying despite having entered the process directly. Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh are among the six candidates who will enter the ring.

3 June 2017: Kohli denied rift with head coach Kumble ahead of India’s Champions Trophy first match with Pakistan. The captain called the report “made up” about the tension between the two, while adding that disagreements existed in every group.

17 June 2017 – CAC meets Kohli and decides to resolve the issue after the Champions Trophy.

20 June 2017 Indian team left for West Indies tour, but Kumble stayed. A source in the Indian board has suggested that Kumble stay in London to perform his duties as the head of the ICC’s cricket committee, which is scheduled to meet in London.

20 June 2017 – Later in the evening, Kumble resigned as India’s head coach, saying it was in the best interest of Indian cricket for him to “move on”.
