Director Namrata Rao opened up about Angry Young Men, focusing on Salim-Javed’s journey in Bollywood.

Angry Young Men director Namrata Rao opened up about making the docu-series in a new interview and revealed the team had close to 800 hours-worth content. The filmmaker made her directorial debut with the series on the lives and legacy of Salim-Javed. She has previously worked with Zoya Akhtar on her projects as a film editor. In the new interview, she revealed that when they began shooting, she felt a lot of information wasn’t interesting. However, by the end of it, all of it changed.

“While I started shooting, I thought a lot of the information wasn’t interesting. What was more interesting was the kind of people they are, what makes them the artistes they are, and how they created these kinds of characters. Then the docu started revealing itself. So it is now a portrait of these artiste,” Namrata told The Indian Express.

Streaming on Amazon Prime Video, Angry Young Men was spread across three episodes and perfectly capsuled anecdotes about Salim-Javed. News18 Showsha gave the series a 3.5/5 rating and wrote, “Directed by Namrata Rao, this three-part series isn’t just a tribute but an exploration of their professional brilliance and personal complexities, showcasing the men who revolutionised Hindi cinema. The documentary title, aptly chosen, pays homage to the iconic, emotionally charged, anti-establishment characters that Salim-Javed so vividly brought to life, most notably through Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘angry young man.’”

“What sets ‘Angry Young Men’ apart is its balanced portrayal. While it celebrates Salim-Javed’s meteoric rise, it doesn’t shy away from discussing their flaws. Rao’s direction gives the series an outsider’s lens, which allows for a more objective narrative,” the review added.

The series shed light on how Salim-Javed became a pair, the money they charged for their films, their biggest hits, their downfall and their split. The series also put the spotlight on Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar’s marriages.
